ISAT Quantitative Reasoning Practice Material

Quantitative Reasoning tests your ability to analyse and apply information to solve problems and make decisions. This section uses material drawn from mathematics and the sciences. It accounts for half of your total ISAT score, making it equally as important as Critical Reasoning.

What Does the Quantitative Reasoning Section Test?

This section does not test advanced mathematics. You will not need calculus, trigonometry, or complex algebra. Instead, it focuses on your ability to reason through problems using fundamental mathematical and scientific concepts. The skills being assessed include:

  • Data interpretation: Reading and drawing conclusions from graphs, tables, charts, and diagrams.
  • Numerical reasoning: Working with percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic arithmetic under time pressure.
  • Probability and statistics: Understanding basic probability, averages, medians, ranges, and how to interpret statistical data.
  • Algebraic reasoning: Solving simple equations, understanding variables, and applying formulas to real-world scenarios.
  • Scientific reasoning: Interpreting experimental data, understanding cause and effect, and evaluating scientific claims based on evidence.

Key Concepts to Master

Data Interpretation

A significant portion of Quantitative Reasoning questions present you with data in the form of tables, bar graphs, line charts, or pie charts. You need to quickly extract relevant information and perform calculations. Practise reading data visualisations from news articles, scientific reports, and government statistics to build this skill.

Percentages and Ratios

Many questions require you to work with percentages, calculate percentage changes, or convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Being fluent with these operations saves significant time during the test.

Estimation and Mental Arithmetic

Since no calculators are allowed on the ISAT, you need to be comfortable with mental arithmetic. Practise estimating answers before doing precise calculations. This helps you eliminate obviously wrong answer choices quickly and serves as a check on your final answer.

Logical Problem Solving

Some questions present logic puzzles or scenarios that require systematic reasoning rather than calculation. These might involve sequences, patterns, spatial reasoning, or deductive logic. The key is to approach them methodically rather than guessing.

How Questions Are Structured

Quantitative Reasoning questions are typically grouped around a shared data set or scenario. You might be given a table of data and then asked three or four questions based on that data. This means the time you invest in understanding the data set pays off across multiple questions. Read the data carefully before attempting any questions in the set.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing through the data: Students often jump straight to the questions without properly understanding the data set. Spending an extra 30 seconds reading the table headings, axis labels, and units can prevent costly errors.
  • Overcomplicating calculations: The ISAT is designed to be solved without a calculator. If you find yourself doing complex long division, you may be approaching the problem wrong. Look for shortcuts and estimations.
  • Ignoring units: Questions may involve different units (kilometres vs metres, percentages vs decimals). Always check that you are comparing like with like before selecting your answer.
  • Neglecting this section: Many students focus disproportionately on Critical Reasoning. Both sections carry equal weight. A strong Critical Reasoning score cannot compensate for a weak Quantitative Reasoning result.

Best Preparation Strategy

Start by reviewing fundamental mathematical concepts: percentages, ratios, averages, and basic algebra. Once you are comfortable with the concepts, move to practising ISAT-style questions under timed conditions. Focus on the reasoning process rather than rote calculation.
